You’re sitting in the airport, ready to board, and thoughts of every plane crash you’ve ever read about keep barging into your head. You try to shake them off, reminding yourself that plane travel is safer than driving a car, but it doesn’t work. You’re going to the doctor next week to have that mark on your thigh looked at and you think it’s probably nothing, but worst-case scenarios float into your head 24/7 and distracting yourself doesn’t work. Why is that?

HOW CAN YOU TELL WHO TO TRUST?

When so many people may be unscrupulous, be wary and follow this advice. Lately, it seems to me that more drivers are actually speeding up to prevent me from entering their lane on the highway. Since drivers have nothing to gain or lose by being nice, I see it as a discouraging indicator of how intrinsically motivated people are to do the right thing. Given what we see on the road, how much can we really trust other people to do the right thing? And how can we assess how much we should trust any given person?

HOW TO KEEP FROM REPEATING YOUR MISTAKE

When we do something wrong, there are two distinct emotions we commonly experience—guilt and shame. These emotions differ based on what we feel bad about. When we feel bad about the action we performed, then we experience guilt. When we feel bad about ourselves for having done something bad, then we experience shame. How do these emotions influence future behavior? An interesting paper in the March 2014 issue of Psychological Science by June Tangney, Jeffrey Stuewig, and Andres Martinez explored this question, studying nearly 500 people who had served time in prison for a felony conviction.

DUMPED, BUT NOT DOWN ( HOW TO DEAL WITH REJECTION)

Rejection is a fundamental law of the (social) universe. But if you laser in on every dis, you'll likely trigger a self-fulfilling prophecy. Rejection-sensitivity is on the rise, but you can learn to brave even the biggest brush-offs. Everybody hurts. In ways big and small, we are all snubbed every day of our lives. Of course, we can't possibly like everyone who likes us or join every group that would have us as a member, so we constantly let others down, too. It's the way the social universe operates. And yet, when it happens to us, we tend to take it personally. Very personally. And, often enough, hard.

15 USES FOR TEA

I can’t vouch for all these home remedies, but many of them I have used with great success. Clean carpets: Clean up musty, dirty carpets by sprinkling dry, used green tea leaves on the carpet. Let them work their magic for about 10 minutes, then vacuum them up. Delicate Persian and Oriental rugs can also benefit from a sprinkling of tea leaves. In this case, sprinkle nearly dry, used whole tea leaves on the rugs, and gently sweep them away.   Shine wood floors: The tannins in black tea can help shine and color hardwood flooring. Follow your regular floor cleaning routine by carefully rubbing some brewed tea into the floor (don’t use too much water on hardwood flooring) and letting it air dry.

WHAT'S THE SECRET TO A BETTER BREAKFAST?

It's better for your health (and your weight) to eat breakfast than to skip it. And it's definitely better to eat a healthy breakfast, high in fibers and nutrients, than one full of refined grains, sugar, salt, and/or saturated fat. But what if you're fresh out of healthy breakfast ideas?   One quick tip I use to keep my breakfast balanced is to "strive fo r five." That means I try to include at least 5 grams of fiber and 5 grams of protein in every breakfast.
